Geography & National Resources
Koprivnica is the seat of Koprivnica-Križevci county in the north-west Croatia. It is located in the valley of Drava river and has over 33000 inhabitants. Situated between the slopes of Bilogora and Kalnik in the south and river Drava in the north, its position enabled it to develop numerous activities such as trade, crafts and administration. Favorable climate conditions and flat landscape as well as local government's sustainable development policies have earned Koprivnica the nickname: Town of bicycles. Koprivnica is an attractive location for investment with a favorable geographical position, strong industrial base and skilled workforce.
Compared with other regions of Croatia, Koprivnica can offer better incentives, infrastructure zones, lower operating costs, better education, support from the local authorities and a clean environment. In 2014 Koprivnica and Varaždin opened the regional university, the University of North, which offers degree programs in electrical engineering multimedia, design and implementation, production engineering, construction, technical and economic logistics, biomedical sciences, journalism, media design, business and management in the media, business economics, communication science and public relations. The mission of the University is the training of competent professional staff for the needs of the real economy and health institutions in north-west Croatia.
Main economic activities
The industrial growth in Koprivnica is steady and its progress is based on production of food, beer, pharmaceuticals and wood and paper processing. Podravka, Croatian food giant is founded and based in Koprivnica. Seasoning Vegeta, Dolcela, as well as Podravka soups and baby food are some of the Podravka’s brands recognizable worldwide. Koprivnica is also home to several multinational companies such as Belupo, the second-largest Croatian pharmaceutical company, "Danica" Ltd., company for production, sales and distribution of meat and meat products and "Carlsberg Croatia", international beverage company.
Food and beverage processing industries contribute to County profits by over 50% and employ the largest number of people. Other relevant industrial sectors in Koprivnica are paper and wood processing (Hartman), pharmaceuticals, steel manufacturing/processing industry, as well as trade, services and construction. Entrepreneurs starting business in either of Koprivnica business zones are offered numerous financial and tax benefits. The new goal of the City government is to provide investors with a building permit within 60 days. Additional incentives include a partial exemption from paying the municipal company tax as well as municipal utility contribution. Koprivnica has an array of dynamic businesses that are export-oriented. The town offers skillful workforce, and takes pride in the fact that University North Koprivnica has tailor-made education programmes based on investor’s needs.
There is a business incubator offering its services to the SME's: helps them in acquiring basic capital via start-up funds, EU or state grants when available, or cheap loans, and also provides quality and cheap business space (starting from 0,15 € per month + utilities).
Koprivnica provides a high quality life and important cultural heritage. It is the home of several museums, to name some: the Naïve Art Museum, Town history museum, Food Museum and Open-air Bicycle museum. There is also the City theatre, a school of music and a Youth Centre. Several cultural and tourist events attract thousands of visitors to the City, especially the Renaissance festival, the most attractive and original event bringing together an increasing number of costumed participants every year, and the Motifs of Podravina art fair including naive art fair, old crafts fair, folk art, antiques fair and local cuisine. Koprivnica is known for the promotion of healthy living and sustainable development. Traditional culture and lifestyle of Koprivnica and north-western Croatia is Central European.
Koprivnica has retained a substantial part of its cultural and historical architectural heritage attracting more and more visitors each year. In fact, the entire old town is a unique architectural heritage. Kilometers of city bike trails provide great opportunities for recreational bike rides. Oldtimer club "Biciklin" from Koprivnica organizes the event where their members ride bicycles older than 70 years. Bicycle trails in the city are well connected with the suburbs, and allow day-long biking trips.
City of Koprivnica is implementing a number of projects and initiatives for sustainable growth, sustainable mobility, initiatives and campaigns:
CIVITAS DYN @MO is the largest and most demanding project in which the City of Koprivnica participates as a partner. The project is funded by FP7 - 7th Framework Programme of the European Union which aims to boost scientific research and development in the competitiveness of the local economy. It focuses on the development of the most effective measures of traffic sustainability based on electromobility and planning of sustainable urban transport, and it was approved as part of the CIVITAS initiative of the cycle CIVITAS II (2012-2015). The project will be implemented in four cities: Aachen, Palma de Mallorca, Gdynia and Koprivnica. The project is worth around 13.1 million euros, with the contribution of the European Union of EUR 8.5 million. The budget of the City of Koprivnica is 920.000,00 euros, with a contribution from the EU 556,221.00 euros.
City of Koprivnica is implementing a number of projects and initiatives for modern traffic planning with the aim to reduce car use such as QUEST and CH4LLENGE and to improve the quality of urban transport and development of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. Project MOBILE 2020 aims to improve regional and national transport legislative related to sustainable transport, especially cycling. Besides that evaluation procedure of Sustainable urban mobility plan has been foreseen by the project ADVANCE. Cyclelogistics focuses on increasing the number of trips where the bike is used as a means to transport cargo.
Apart from the above mentioned measures and projects City of Koprivnica has successfully implemented following project in the field of culture, education and tourism funded by IPA CBC and Life Long Learning programmes.
Aim: popularization of cycling and cycling routes, expanding the use of interest points by using bike sharing system
Development of a network of cycling paths and related services in the natural surroundings of rivers Mura and Drava "Cycle in a network"
Amusment Tourist Development Strategy
Aim: development of common amusement strategy and documentation for technological – amusement park as key documents for development of amusement tourism in the cross border region
Cross- Border promotion of new technologies in education
Results: three elementary schools in Koprivnica have been equipped with modern IT and technical systems, 30 teachers have gained skills in designing e-learning teaching units about renewable energy and environmental protection (www.edutech-project.com) for pupils.
European Roma integration good practice exchange and policy Network
Result: development of a Guidelines for sustainable and successful inclusion of Roma in the education system and society and the exchange of good practices regarding the integration of Roma across Europe
Connecting and Multiplying Pannonian University Spaces
Aim: creating key development documents in order to determine educational needs and perspectives and possibilities for the development of higher education in the cross-border region
Searching for New Business Opportunities in the Cross-border Region
Result: project has enabled better cooperation between entrepreneurs from Koprivnica and Nagykanizsa, web catalogue with products and companies profiles, e-learning courses for Hungarian and Croatian have been made

Results: higher number of cyclists and pedestrians in traffic intensive promotion of benefits of sustainable transport citizens are motivated to use bicycles for work, school, shopping or for recreation purposes
ENCRO Promoting and Testing Soft Measures for Energy Saving in Croatia
Results: : guidelines, workshops and education of children aimed at raising awareness of their parents about the energy saving measures and possibilities in their homes
