25.11.2008, 12:14
The Information Centre for EU Laws was opened on November 20, 2008 at the Faculty of Law University of Zagreb. The opening was attended by the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Republic of Croatia Information Vincent Degert, Dean of the Faculty of Law University of Zagreb Josip Kregar, Vice Dean in charge of international relations Hrvoje Sikirić and many professors and students. By establishing the Information Centre for EU Laws, the Faculty of Law is trying to respond to the growing needs of the academic community and other users for the information on the EU and Acquis Communautaire, as was pointed out at the opening ceremony.
Namely, within its information strategy 'EU in the world', the European Commission is establishing information centres entitled 'EU-i' in non-member states at the demand of the host institutions, aimed at informing the general and expert public. As the Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the Republic of Croatia emphasized, the aim of such information centres is to provide support in teaching and exploring the European laws and the European unification process because in the EU accession process, it is crucial to bring the information on laws, legal and judicial practice and EU policies closer to the academic and broader public. It is important that Croatian citizens are proactively informed because at the end of the negotiations process they will be the ones deciding whether or not they want to join the EU.
That is why students are an important element of the information process because they collect but also bring the information to the broader community, and by connecting to the European universities, they share the common European values and knowledge in the partnership relations.
Besides providing access to a series of official legal data bases and internet sources for EU laws, the Centre also provides access to the publications of the Council of Europe, UN and other international organizations and organizes seminars and workshops.
After the presentation of the Centre which is located at the ground floor of the Faculty of Law, Trg Maršala Tita 3, Zagreb, reputable speakers answered the students' questions on the education possibilities abroad, harmonization of various legal practices with the ones of the EU, internship possibilities at EU institutions, influence of the financial crisis on scholarship granting and judiciary and administration in the context of the recently published Croatia Progress Report.
