06.11.2008, 14:07
Speakers include Committee of the Regions (CoR) member Michael Häupl, President of CEMR and mayor of Vienna, and Jos Chabert, Chair of the CoR working group on the Western Balkans, as well as representatives of the European Parliament and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
"South-eastern European countries are still facing major challenges in the adoption and implementation of the necessary reforms. We must not forget however, that the countries in the region made significant progress until now and we are committed to further support new developments and reforms, especially in the field of decentralisation and distribution of state power" says Jos Chabert.
Organised in cooperation with the Österreichischer Städtebund and the Network of Associations of Local Authorities of South-East Europe (NALAS), the event is expected to attract over 100 delegates from 20 European countries.
The progress towards EU accession is only one of the three main aims set out in the mandate of the CoR working group on Western Balkans. This working group also aims to support the development of local and regional democracy within a multicultural society, as well as the regional and cross-border cooperation, which plays a key role by developing political dialogue between neighbouring countries and between national minorities. The CoR working group on Western Balkans is to meet in Brussels on the 13 November.
