Presentation of "Natura 2000" Ecological Network in Croatia
16.09.2008, 08:49
On Tuesday, 16 September, the Ministry of Culture and Delegation of the European Commission (DEC) to the Republic of Croatia will present NATURA 2000 Ecological Network Project in Croatia.
It is the largest coordinated network of nature protection areas in the world, created with the purpose to preserve Europe's rich, but endangered biological diversity.
The goal of this network is to establish benchmarks for their development, while preserving rare species and habitats. As such, the project offers new opportunities for rural areas in a form of eco-tourism, agriculture, forestry, leisure etc. - all of it harmless for wild plants and wildlife.
As a future member of the EU, Croatia must also declare its own Natura 2000 areas in order to integrate into the European network. As a part of the preparations, the State Institute for Nature Protection (SINP) has prepared a list of potential areas of interest for Natura Ecological Network.
This EUR 1.6-million-worth project is financed by the European Union and is carried out for the Republic of Croatia by the State Institute for Nature Protection.
Mr. Božo Biškupić, Minister of Culture, underlined the Ministry's support in the project of institutional strengthening and implementation of Natura2000 in Croatia, stressing that, as a future member, Croatia will largely contribute to this ecological network and try establish the best possible cooperation with other EU member states.
DEC's representative, Mr. Oskar Benedikt, Counselor, pointed out the project's importance in the light of Croatia's admission to the EU and the necessity for bringing Croatian legislation into conformity with the Union's acquis communautaire.
During implementation of the project, a series of workshops will be organized. They will cover all the areas included in the project and the proposed localities will be discussed there.
Information about the project can be found on NATURA 2000's special Internet page: www.natura2000.hr
