Four Croatian Counties affected by the war move towards EU with strengthened capacities

On Tuesday, 10th June 2008 the Delegation of the European Commission to the Republic of Croatia and Ministry of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Management will hold a conference entitled 'Sustainable Development of Croatia's War Affected Areas - County Development Capacity and Management".
Its main objective of the Conference is to present the results achieved under the CARDS 14 million Eur programme. The programme aimed at achieving sustainable development of Croatia's four war affected counties (Karlovac, Lika-Senj, Brod-Posavina and Požega-Slavonia County).
The CARDS 2004 programme consisted of a technical assistance project as well as 13 projects financed by the CARDS 2004 11.1 million allocation. The technical assistance project provided the capacity building and training at both county and municipal level for identification, selection, preparation and implemented of locally driven projects. In addition, it prepared also other projects to be financed by other funds and for Structural funds once Croatia becomes a member of the EU.
The project built the capacity of county Programme Management Units, as well as assisted in the strategic planning in terms of ensuring Regional Operational Programme implementation and that Regional Partnership Committees played an important role in selecting projects which ensure sustainable development in their counties. Moreover, the project also contributed to strengthening coordination between the county level and the Ministry of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Management - the national counterpart on this project.
It will be addressed by Prof. dr. sc. Slobodan Uzelac, Vice President of the Croatian Government; Mr. Petar Čobanković, Minister of Regional Development Forestry and Water Management; H.E. Vincent Degert Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Republic of Croatia and Prefects of Karlovac, Lika-Senj, Brod-Posavina and Požega Slavonia Counties.
The conference will take place on 10 June 2008, at 11.00a.m. at Hotel Panorama in Zagreb.
