Preparing Croatia's regions for Structural Funds: Opportunities and Challenges

The conference will focus on opportunities and challenges for Croatia's regions, since the regional policy is one of the important areas in Croatia's preparations for the EU accession, and it links directly to the EU-objective of pursuing economic and social cohesion. The conference will also discuss on how the Croatian Government intends to organise its policies, strategies, programmes and laws to maximise the impact from the Structural Funds and domestic policies for Croatia as a whole and for the various regions.
In the context of this conference, the organizers will also present the CARDS 2004 project „Regional Development Capacity Building Facility". The main objectives of this 1,508 million EUR worth project is to increase the capacity of regional and local authorities and stakeholders for the effective absorption and use of funds for development, as well as to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry in coordinating and managing development programmes at county/wider region level and preparing for its future role in managing EU Structural Funds. This project will also provide technical assistance and training in building the capacity of those institutions and agencies that will be active in the field of regional development planning at central and county level in Croatia. It will work intensively in the regions and with the regions to assure that project objectives are reached most effectively. The project is implemented by an international consortium consisting of ECORYS Nederland BV (lead partner) and GDSI Ireland. Activities have started in September 2007 and will continue until September 2009.
The conference will be addressed by Mr Slobodan Uzelac, Vice President of the Croatian Government, Mr Petar Čobanković, Minister of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Management and Ambassador Mr Vincent Degert, Head of Delegation of the European Commission which will speak about achieving of economic and social cohesion and meeting the requirements of the EU. The practitioners and regional politicians from abroad will present lessons learnt from recent experiences in new EU Member States.
The conference will take place on 16 May 2008 at 10:00 at the Hotel Antunović (hall Tomislav) in Zagreb.
