Croatia's Europe Week celebration to start in early May

With a number of different activities the Delegation of the European Commission to the Republic of Croatia is to once again mark the traditional Europe Week thus celebrating the most important date in the history of the unified Europe: 9 May, that is, Europe Day.
As of 2-10 May 2008, the Delegation of the European Commission will organize a number of events to mark this year's Europe Week, that is, Europe Day.
For the nine days of the Europe Week, the Delegation and its partners have planned a number of different activities, including the EU Bus touring nine Croatian cities, exhibitions, lectures, round tables and concerts. The Croatian journalists will for the third time be presented with the Robert Schuman Journalism Award (award for the best piece of journalistic work featuring the EU). The citizens of Zagreb will enjoy in music in the Cvjetni trg as well as gather relevant information at the stands of the Delegation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, and the EU Member States' embassies in Croatia.
The partners in EU Bus Croatia 2008 - the touring bus bringing EU information, to nine Croatian towns are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic Croatia, the EU Member States Embassies accredited in Croatia, as well as Croatian Counties and their county councils for European integration,
It is planned that the bus would travel around the country from May 2 until May 10, 2008. It would visit on its tour 9 Croatian towns (Dubrovnik, Sinj, Šibenik, Gospić, Varaždin, Bjelovar, Đakovo,Požega and Zagreb). Number of different cultural and entertaining, but also informative and professional events, will take place in those cities. Furthermore, in each town the EU bus, placed on a central location (main town square/waterfront), would be the focal point for various activities. The programme also envisages lectures and debates in secondary schools, Universities and/or Town halls as well as visits to schools and local TV and radio stations in cooperation with local and regional authorities.
The 'EU bus project' launched by the EC Delegation in 2007, has as its main objective to promote the EU and its core values and ideas across the country. In this way, all actors of this project will approach Croatian citizens directly and provide them with relevant information on the EU and related EU issues, but also hear their opinions and suggestions about the EU and EU integration process.
The bus will remain in each of the above indicated town as of 10.00 to 13.00 before moving to its next destination. The citizens will have opportunity to get immediate information about the EU and related topics. The visitors of the bus will also have the opportunity to share their stand points on Croatia's accession process and its EU membership, participate in various games, win prizes, and have fun.
The Europe Day is celebrated throughout the European Union Member States. However, Croatia the EU acceding country which has been celebrating since many years the birthday of the unified Europe in a unique way - by organizing an entire week of different events.
On 9 May it will be exactly 58 years since the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the pooling of the coal and steel production within the framework of a new, supra-state organization - the European Community. In that post-war, unstable and tense period of time, the aim of such a community was not just the creation of a common market but, for the most part, the preservation of peace. The Schuman declaration is thus the first political and institutional document based on which the gradual joining together of the Western European countries into a regionally ever bigger and politically ever more connected whole - the present European Union.
