ELISAN and Committee of the Regions agree about the key matters for 2008-2009
30.04.2008, 18:43
The president of the European Local Inclusion and Social Action Network (ELISAN), Patrick Kanner, and the President of the Committee of the Regions (CoR), Luc Van Den Brande, met in Brussels on Thursday 10 April and decided on areas where they could work together in 2008-2009, namely intergenerational solidarity, individual access to rights and protection and demonstrating the principles of solidarity. Luc Van Den Brande took advantage of the opportunity to repeat that regions and cities should not be the sub-contractors for national policies. He said he backed active partnership with ELISAN under the French Presidency of the EU. His comments demonstrate the importance of his meeting with the CoR President, said Elena Curtopassi of ELISAN's managing committee and representative of the Region of Venice in Brussels.
Alongside cooperation with the CoR, ELISAN explains in a press release that it will be working on the following priorities in 2008 and 2009: social services, services of general interest, social inclusion, tackling discrimination, disability, monitoring implementation of the principles of subsidiarity and social cohesion set out in the Lisbon Reform Treaty, and using social action to integrate foreigners.
Created on 28 January 2008, ELISAN represents 1,011 cities in Europe, in other words some 28 million inhabitants (in Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Poland and Romania). Cities in Luxembourg and Sweden will shortly be joining the network. Info: www.elisan.eu
