21.04.2008, 11:39
"Civil Society Development in Southeast Europe: Building Europe Together" conference was held in Brussels on April 17 and April 18. The conference offered a platform for networking, exchanging best practices and building partnerships for civil society organisations from the EU and the Enlargement countries. It also provided information on financial support by the EU to civil society development.
Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik, and "Open Society Institute" founder, George Soros, among others, addressed some 450 civil society representatives and specialists. The conference was hosted by the Commission's Directorate-General for Enlargement, in the Commission's "Charlemagne" building, in Brussels.
The conference focused on civil society organisations working in four broad areas: good governance and democratisation; human rights; social inclusion/development, including education; and environmental protection and sustainable development.
On 17 April, keynote speeches were held by Commissioner Rehn and George Soros, followed by a question-and-answer session with the participants in the audience. Afterwards, a panel discussion with high-level personalities, including Commissioner Janez Potočnik, focused on the role of civil society in the accession process of the new Member States
Besides plenary meetings and panel discussions, the programme included thematic workshops, special information sessions, and an information market-place where participants may meet, exchange ideas and learn about EU programmes and activities of other organisations in their field.
The paralel events of the conference were the concert by the Sarajevo-based "Youth Symphony Orchestra of Southeast Europe" in Flagey concert hall, held on April 17, as well as"Balkan Film Days", a showcase of some of the region's best recent films on 21 to 23 April.
