Negotiation state - on 10th April 2008
Following the European Commission's verification of the set benchmarks for the chapter 24- Justice, freedom and security, Croatia, on the 10th of April, accepted the negotiation position for this mentioned chapter.
A week before, COREPER had verified 5 benchmarks for the opening of negotiations in 3 new chapters: Free movement of goods; Agriculture and rural development; and Social policy and employment.
In total, Croatia received benchmarks for opening of negotiations in 11 out of 33 chapters of acquis communautaire. This means a total of 23 opening benchmarks, and so far Croatia has submitted 10 benchmarks for 7 chapters. In addition, 6 benchmarks for 4 chapters have already been verified, and 4 are being analyzed by the EC.
European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olli Rehn , after meeting with the Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Gordan Jandroković , has warned Croatia that in order to finish accession negotiations by Fall next year, the remaining 13 benchmarks for the four respective chapters must be met by the end of June.
The plan is, he adds, to prepare in the following two weeks two more negotiating positions. In addition, by the 21st of April, Croatia is expected to open two more negotiation chapters and those are Energy, and Transport Policy. Furthermore, Rehn has stated how Croatia is expected to close one of the negotiation chapters by the end of the Slovenian presidency over the European Union, as well as to meet the set benchmarks for the remaining four chapters which it needs to fulfill. Negotiation chapters involved are: Public procurement; Food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy; Competition policy; and Judiciary and fundamental rights.
