Gerd Harms announced as new chairman of the Committee of the Regions Commission for Culture, Research and Education

Gerd Harms (DE/PES), State Secretary of the Land of Brandenburg,
has been elected as Chairman of the Committee of the Regions Commission
for Culture, Research and Education (EDUC) to serve a two-year term of
office. Harms takes over from Jyrki Myllyvirta (FI/EPP), Mayor of
Lahti. Harms will be joined by newly elected First Vice-Chair Keith
Walters (UK/EPP), Member of Cambridgeshire County Council, and Second
Vice-Chair Heinz Schaden (AT/PES), Mayor of Salzburg.
At a meeting of the EDUC commission on 28 February, the German state secretary welcomed his new role and emphasised his commitment towards promoting the voice of regional government in the core areas of the commission's work: lifelong learning, culture, youth and active citizenship, research and innovation and information society. Harms promised to continue the work of outgoing Chair Myllyvirta, who led the commission from 2006-2008, stating: "I am looking to build on the successes of the past two years and strengthen regional cooperation in Europe in the areas of culture, research and education".
