The PES Group in the Committee of the Regions renews the mandate of its Executive

Socialists and Social Democrats in the Committee of the Regions (CoR) renewed today their confidence in the President, First Vice-President and Vice-Presidents of the PES Group. The Group's meeting was held ahead of the CoR Plenary Session marking the start of the second half of the institution's quadrennial term of office (2006-2010). At this point, Michel DELEBARRE, one of the most successful Presidents of the institution, becomes CoR 1st Vice-President for the period 2008-2010.
Mercedes BRESSO, President of the Piedmont Region (Italy), remains President of the PES Group, assisted in her duties by the First Vice-President, Karl-Heinz KLÄR, Secretary of State responsible for European Affairs of the Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany).
The PES Group also confirmed as Vice-Presidents Vicente ALVAREZ ARECES, President of the Government of the Principality of Asturias (Spain), Gabor BIHARY, Member of the General Assembly of the City of Budapest (Hungary), Andreas FOURAS, Mayor of the City of Patras (Greece), and Karl-Heinz LAMBERTZ, Minister-president of the Government of the German-speaking Community (Belgium).
Moreover, the PES Group is expected to hold the presidencies of two CoR commissions: CONST, to be chaired by Claudio MARTINI, President of the Tuscany Region (Italy), and EDUC by Gerd HARMS, Minister for Federal and European Affairs of the Region of Brandenburg and State Secretary in the national chancellery (Germany). Furthermore, Leszek SWIETALSKI, Mayor of Stare Bogaczowice (Poland), is expected to become the new President of the CoR Committee for Administrative and Financial Affairs (CAFA).
Last but not least, the six PES Group Coordinators shall continue to play a key role in ensuring the Group's cohesion in the works of the CoR commissions:
§ Anna TERRÓN I CUSI, Secretary for European Affairs of the Presidency of the Catalonia Region (Spain), for the commission for Constitutional Affairs, European Governance and the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (CONST);
§ Bernard SOULAGE, First Vice-President of the Regional Council of Rhône-Alpes (France), for the commission for Territorial Cohesion Policy (COTER);
§ Michael COHEN, Mayor of Kalkara Local Council (Malta), for the commission for Sustainable Development (DEVE);
§ Elina LEHTO-HAGGRÖTH, Mayor of the City of Lohja (Finland), for the commission for Economic and Social Policy (ECOS);
§ Elisabeth VITOUCH, Member of the Vienna City Council (Austria), for the commission for Culture, Education and Research (EDUC);
§ Helene LUND, Member of the City Council of Farum (Denmark), for the commission for Extertnal Relations and Decentralised Cooperation (RELEX).
