During his presidency, Martin Schulz is going to encourage democratic decisions in Europe. In his inaugural speech he said, that he is going to diminish the prevalent tendencies of national interests in the EU, which are endagering the very idea of an united Europe. Therefore, he will focus on the strengthening of the Parliament's role, compared to other EU institutions.
Mercedes Bresso, the president of the CoR , welcomed the EP's new president. He stated that Martin Schulz is assuming the office in a period, where "an extraordinary joint effort will be needed to properly face crucial challenges such as the launch of a special EU plan for growth and jobs, the finalisation of the rules for the new 'fiscal compact' and the negotiations on the Multi-annual Financial Framework 2014-2020".
