Regions for Economic Change -'Building Sustainable Growth'

The European Commission will hold its annual Regions for Economic Change conference "Building Sustainable Growth" on 20-21 May. As part of the event, Johannes Hahn, EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, will present the prestigious 'RegioStars' awards recognising the best regional innovative projects supported under EU regional policy on 20 May. 24 projects have been shortlisted as RegioStars finalists competing for six awards.
The background:
The aim of the conference is for European regional policy practitioners to showcase examples of good practice and translate project success stories into mainstream policy and programmes. It is organised around three key themes: sustainable energy; sustainable ICT solutions; and, greening Europe's cities. More than 500 participants from regions all over Europe are expected to attend.
The event:
The two-day conference is organised by the European Commission's Regional Policy Directorate-General. A high-level political forum will take place in the afternoon of the first day with politicians and practitioners discussing the future of European cohesion policy within the new EU2020 framework. Keynote addresses will include Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Regional Policy, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Commissioner for Research and Innovation, and Janez Potočnik, Commissioner for Environment.
Commissioner Hahn, and Jan Olbrycht, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the RegioStars Jury, will present the 2010 RegioStars awards at the Square Meeting Centre, Rue Ravenstein 2, 1000 Brussels, on 20 May at 18:30.
