Open Doors Day 8 May: Towns and Regions celebrate Europe!
10.05.2010, 12:06
9 May 1945 was the first day of peace in Europe after the end of the Second World War. Five years later France proposed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, thereby laying the foundation stone for today's European Union, in whose Member States peace, prosperity and stability is assured. This is why 9 May has been designated Europe Day. To mark this occasion, each year on a Saturday in May, the EU Institutions open their doors to citizens so they can gain a better understanding of how they work.
The Committee of the Regions extends a warm invitation to you. There are many interesting activities planned for 8 May: folk dancers from Estonia and Romania will invite you to put your dancing skills to the test; nine Spanish regions will present the "Santiago de Compostela" pilgrimage; the two European Capitals of Culture 2011 - Tallinn and Turku - will be showing animated films - and much more.
On Saturday 8 May, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the Committee of the Regions is open to visitors: Jacques-Delors-Building, 99-101 rue Belliard, 1040 Brussels. Further Information can be found in the events programme.
Europe Day, will really move up a gear on 9 May when towns, cities and regions throughout Europe will be staging lots of local events throughout the day. Hamburg, for example, is organising an entire Europe week over this period with its slogan "Hafen für Europa" (Harbour for Europe) with panel discussions, workshops and readings. The Spanish region of Aragón and Toulouse in France are organising joint "Cafés de Europa", (Europe cafés) whilst Białystok in Poland is focussing on Concerts, competitions and exhibitions.
